“I just had my first Shockwave session this week and I can already tell a big difference in a spot on my calf that has been bugging me for about 9 months! I run quite a few half marathons each year and this pain in my calf has been lingering even after PT, massage, and more. I had my first (of 5) session two days ago and when I went to run today, the dull ache that's usually there was barely noticeable. I can't wait to see how it feels after the rest of the sessions. I'm really hopeful that this will actually heal the injury that has been lingering for WAY too long.”

Compassionate, credentialed care

Dr. Matthew Lau, DC
Doctor of Chiropractic
Doctor of Chiropractic, Northwestern Health Sciences University
For Dr. Matthew Lau, chiropractic care is about more than relieving pain—it's about building trust, connecting with patients and helping people live healthier, more active lives. He enjoys caring for patients of all ages, from infants to older adults, as well as athletes and those recovering from sports injuries. His goal is for every patient to feel heard, understood, and confident in their care, with honest recommendations focused on helping them feel better as quickly as possible—never through gimmicks or unnecessary treatment plans. Dr. Lau earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Northwestern Health Sciences University after studying at North Dakota State University. When he's not in the clinic, you'll find him spending time with his three children, working out, golfing, and hiking, often with camera in hand!

Dr. Matthew Gilbertson, DC
Doctor of Chiropractic
Doctor of Chiropractic, Palmer College of Chiropractic
Dr. Matt Gilbertson and his wife were both born and raised in Moorhead. Matt is a 1989 graduate of Moorhead High School and went on to attend NDSU and then MSUM for his undergraduate studies before earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1995, where he specialized in the Gonstead technique. Matt's approach is simple: treat every patient like family and help them restore their health as quickly as possible. He believes strongly in caring for the whole person, not just spinal health. That philosophy led him to opening Downtown Health & Wellness in Moorhead, where the practice has expanded beyond chiropractic care to include the additional health services of a gym, and a spa.

Dr. Paul M. Bekkum, DC, CCEP
Doctor of Chiropractic
Doctor of Chiropractic, Northwestern Health Sciences University
Dr. Paul Bekkum brings more than 30 years of clinical experience to Downtown Health & Wellness, combining hands-on chiropractic care with root-cause functional medicine. A Certified Chiropractic Extremity Practitioner (CCEP), he treats spine, shoulder, hip, knee, and foot complaints that don't resolve with adjustments alone. Beyond structural care, Dr. Bekkum is trained through the Institute for Functional Medicine and certified in 3X4 Genetics and functional blood chemistry analysis — tools he uses to answer the question patients hear too often: “Your labs are normal, but you still feel awful.” His approach is simple: find what's actually driving the problem, then build a plan around your biology instead of an average. Outside the clinic, he trains in functional fitness and bodyweight strength.
